4th of July Treats: C’mon, Indulge!

4th of July, Eve Hersh, Healthy Recipe, Holidays, Nutrition, Recipe -

4th of july recipesConfession time.

My excitement for holidays isn’t usually about the “spirit of the day” or anything honorable like that. What gets me going is the thought of all of the cute treats I finally have the excuse to make. And then eat. Obviously.

I try to cook at home most days of the year, but when you’re busy and/or lazy (okay, most likely just lazy in my case), that can be a tall order. But the holidays are a great opportunity to try new dishes: you can justify spending money on cool ingredients and calories clearly don’t count because America only turns 237 once, ya know? (Sidebar: I actually think the concept of the calorie should be erased from all women’s minds.)

So, to celebrate my absolute favorite holiday (aside from my birthday, which follows just 17 days after Independence Day aka I LOVE JULY), I compiled this list of delectable dishes that I will attempt for the 4th. Some of them are healthy in terms of content, while some of them are healthy purely because it’s healthy to indulge yourself now and again. And let’s be real, ladies, you can’t enjoy your day if you’re mentally calculating glycemic load, fat content, or how many hours you’ll have to clock at the gym to work off that cupcake. So you have my permission to mindfully enjoy a guilt-free day in which you throw out the “Oh, I shouldn’ts” or the “I wish I didn’ts.” Seriously.

And if you haven’t checked it out, you should probably satisfy your foodie needs by checking out our Pinterest board “Nurture” and/or by sharing your favorite recipes with us.

Also, do me a solid and snap a photo of your Independence Day treats and share ‘em! You can tag Stonewear on Instagram with @stoneweardesigns or just post them to our Facebook page. I promise to salivate over the photos and subsequently shower you with jealousy and lots of compliments.

Happy Fourth, folks!

4th of July Treats

Jul 01, 2013 - wilton.com - 12
Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcakes

I'm making these with homemade red velvet cake (as opposed to the boxed variety) and topping them with blue candles and/or sprinkles instead of nuts. Perfect color scheme. Perfect concoction.

Honey Yogurt Berry Pops

Here's a healthier, but still delectable treat. Throw in some blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries, and you've got an Independence Day trifecta (and the honey helps, too).

Strawberry "Cake" Pops

Not a cake fan? Gluten free? Or do you just hate the idea of turning the oven on in the dead of summer? That's cool. Try these.

Watermelon Cake

My best friend loves frosting, loves watermelon, and hates cake. So we've decided to make this watermelon cake (in addition to the cupcakes) this year. The fruit is really just a vehicle for frosting, but hey, that's cool.

Blueberry, Strawberry, & Jicama Salsa

This looks like an awesome fruity salsa. It's on a treat list, because, well, I want it to be.

Fruit Cones

This is a great concept for those of you who want to skip the ice cream but still enjoy the summery festiveness that ice cream cones offer.

Tutti Fruitti Stuffed French Toast

4th of July breakfast anyone? If your answer wasn't a resounding "yes," please try again.

Baked Strawberry Donuts

I've never been a big donut person. But once in awhile I get the weirdest, most intense donut craving. If it happens to strike on the 4th, these may just do the trick. And for festive purposes, I'd add some blue sprinkles.

Grilled Blackberry, Strawberry, Basil and Brie Pizza Crisps

In case you like mixing savory with your sweet, try these crisps. Just be sure to send me an invitation to eat them with you.

Mini Berry Cream Pies

Here's a lighter recipe that will surely satisfy that sugar craving and leave your guests feeling happy. Nobody has to know that they're low-cal!
