Stonewear Ambassador Brandi Humphrey and her husband, Jeremy, organized an Ultra Marathon on July 14 in McCall, Idaho. She had just two hours of sleep the night before the event, she said, but added that it was worth it. “The race was hard, remote, long, and the winner of the 40 miler was a woman-world class runner,” Brandi told us via email. “She quoted our race as one of the top three most beautiful runs she has ever done—and hard, too.” Stonewear Designs supported the event by donating headbands and hats.  The following is the news report about the event. Enjoy, and congrats to Brandi for doing an awesome job organizing her first major race!

What makes a trail race a “CLASSIC”?

Big views, high altitude peaks and legendary singletrack for starters. Throw in great prizes ($$$), well stocked aid stations at reasonable intervals, crew access and a well-marked course. Host it in a beautiful mountain resort town with something for everyone to enjoy. Visit McCall, Idaho, this summer and throw down on 10, 20 or 40 miles of the finest trails in Idaho … A Classic is born.

Joelle Vaught of Boise covered 40 miles of mountain trails east of McCall in just over eight hours to win the first McCall Trail Running Classic on Saturday, hosted at Jug Mountain Ranch. Vaught and the other competitors faced courses of 10, 20 or 40 miles, with the longest course seeing 9,500 feet of ascent and 9,500 feet of decent. The 161 racers had 13-1/2 hours to finish the course, which started at Jug Mountain Ranch and passed such landmarks as Louie Lake and Boulder Lake, and summiting Boulder Mountain. Runners came from Canada, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Nevada, New York, Utah, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

The race started cool and overcast but warmed into the low 80s.

“We were worried about high stream crossings, but the melting peaked and the streams shrunk just in time,” explained Stonewear Grassroots Team Member Brandi Humphrey, who directed the race with her husband, Jeremy.

Ultra runners face many more obstacles than road racers, including extreme weather, altitude, finding their way and encountering wild animals. “As the run goes beyond the marathon distance, runners will deplete all of their stored muscle sugar reserves and be left with nothing but guts to get them through,” Humphrey said.  For more information of the course, visit mccalltrailrunningclassic.com.

The next local ultra event will be the first Idaho Mountain Trail Ultra Festival 100 miler, to be held on Oct. 6-7.Starting and finishing at Burgdorf Hot Springs, the race will cover 100 miles of trails and summits crossing eight passes and gaining a total of 22,000 feet. Runners will have 36 hours to cover the grueling course, with the starting gun sounding at 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 and all runners due back by 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.
